US contract M1817 "Common Rifle" by Henry Derringer. 36" barrel of .58 caliber smooth bore. First type marking with large "US" on lock over "DERINGER/PHILADA". Metal parts have an untouched chocolate patina overall with scattered areas old uncleaned rust and scattered pitting. Stock has untouched worn patina surfaces with a slightly dry appearance overall, has a deep worn indentation on the right side of the forestock between the upper and middle bands on the right side, some expected chipping in the ramrod channel edges, a couple minor cracks opposite the lock, and a small chip in the lock mortise. Functional patchbox. Sling swivels were removed long ago. Interesting period square nut used to hold hammer on tumbler. Lock does not half cock, does cock fully and release when the trigger is squeezed. Hammer is a little loose on the tumbler. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
