C1850-80 fine Delaware County, New York target rifle by Amos P Wood of North Hamden. Sellers' "American Gunsmiths" lists him as having operated 1850-1882. Hamden remains a small town in the Catskill Mountain region outside the state park area. A claim to fame of the town is the first known mention in a newspaper of baseball in 1825, referenced as "bass-ball". Marked on top of barrel "A.P.WOOD/CAST STEEL", on flat of barrel in front of bolster hidden by stock "REMINGTON/CAST STEEL", with owner's nameplate in lower right side of butt engraved "Wm.A.Soper". 35-1/4" octagon barrel with turned muzzle and original brass bullet starter. Bore is 0.36" and octagon portion of barrel is 1-3/16" width. Nice original sights including flip-up circular front sight, adjustable open rear sight on barrel (elevator missing), and folding "lollipop" tang sight. Nice german silver furnishings. Iron parts have a dark patina and are virtually free of pitting. Circular box in right side of butt contains two period conical lead bullets which fit the bore. Walnut halfstock is fine with some attractive grain in the butt, shows light wear and use with minor handling marks, one moderate mark above the lock, one small chip above the lock, and a couple minuscule grain cracks to the wood less than 1/2". This is a nicely built rifle that was clearly cared for over the years. Mechanically good including double set triggers, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
