C1850 percussion plains rifle by prolific manufacturer Henry Deringer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 39-3/4" octagon barrel of about 0.55" bore and 1" width. Marked on top of barrel "H.DERINGER/PHILADA". Plainly made, moderate weight, large bore rifle typical of those preferred for western migration. Metal parts have a medium to dark patina with some pitting on barrel and lockplate. Stock shows moderate handling marks from wear and use, has some grain cracks below the rear of the lock, small chip at rear of barrel tang, a couple grain cracks at rear of butt and tiny replaced chip at toe of butt. Nipple is a modern replacement. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
