Scarce Pennsylvania militia smooth rifle by Christian Gumpf of Lancaster, PA. Christian is the son of Johan Christopher Gumpf also of Lancaster, both are listed as having produced Kentucky rifles and military rifles. Signed on sideplate "CG" in distinctive script also seen on rifles signed with the full Gumpf last name. "DREPPERT" marked lock also seen in Gumpf rifles, most likely a member of the Dreppard or Drepperd family, who also operated in Lancaster in firearms operations. 38-1/8" octagon barrel of about 0.63" smooth bore, 2" of muzzle turned round to 1-1/8" width in order to accept a bayonet for militia service. Metal parts are in an uncleaned patina state with some expected pitting in the barrel breech area. Straight-grained walnut fullstock is good with an older varnished finish showing scattered marks from handling and a couple minor slivers along the forearm edge. Lock is mechanically functional aside from the trigger being able to release the hammer from half cock. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
