Springfield M1863 Type I percussion rifled musket, dated 1863 on lock. Eagle proof and part of date visible on barrel, faint cartouches opposite lock, and hand-applied initial "M" on barrel breech. 40" barrel. Metal parts are an uncleaned patina with an overall light pitting. Ramrod, middle barrel band, and 500 yard leaf from sight are absent. Buttplate is pitted, likely from many years of sitting in a cellar or barn, and has some associated age to the wood adjacent. Stock is worn overall with expected handling marks from many years of use, chipping to ramrod channel, a couple old flakes missing behind the middle band stop, and a crack that extends forward and rear of the lock around to the rear lock bolt that seems to be repaired without any play. This is a fair musket that has a "seen the elephant" look. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
