Springfield M1855 Maynard primed rifled musket. Matching 1859 dates on lock and barrel, eagle on door and barrel proofs are all sharp and strong, nicely sunken cartouche in stock opposite lock. Transitional configuration gun made with iron forend cap and short range rear sight, but before the patchbox was added that year. Premium condition gun for the model with both sling swivels. Metal parts have a light uncleaned patina overall and virtually free of pitting. Stock shows light wear and use with well-defined edges, has expected handling marks, a few of which are moderate, never cleaned, with a little added finish. Ramrod channel shows a couple slivers and a small crack. Overall an above average condition for a gun that would have been a premium arm for the entirety of the Civil War. Mechanically good including automatic Maynard primer, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
