M1861 contract musket by William Mason. Barrel shortened to 33" long and bored smooth to 0.60", barrel shortened to just in front of lower barrel band. Built to a M1863 configuration with eagle on bolster and barrel dated 1864. Lock markings are faint but identifiable with date of 1863. Metal parts have a dark patina overall with some pitting in the breech and some dings rear of the barrel band. Stock has been lightly sanded, broken in the wrist and repaired, has visible inspector cartouches opposite lock. Ramrod, ramrod pipe, and lower sling swivel are absent. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
