M1816 percussion conversion contract musket by R & D Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. No readable trace of the Johnson portion of the marking can be discerned, but maker can be deduced by the format of "MIDDN" marking at rear of lock. Dated 1835. Original length 42" barrel. Metal parts have an overall moderate pitting with a rust patina. Stock may have been lightly cleaned, has a visible cartouche in wood opposite the lock. Has some minor handling marks and little chips, plus some more chipping on underside of the forearm in front of the middle band, and a large bruise in the left side of the wrist. Has a nice antique leather sling with buckle. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
