M1816 flintlock contract musket with New Jersey "ESSEX BRIGADE" militia markings. The origin of the Essex Brigade is in 1775, serving in the American Revolution. After the war, it was reorganized into the New Jersey militia, later taking the Essex Brigade name back on. 42" barrel with proofs in breech, stock proofed opposite lock mortise "GF" and in deep cartouche that is believed to be "SNJ". Additionally, it is boldly marked "ESSEX BRIGADE" adjacent to the triggerguard and in the toe of the butt. Metal parts are an untouched rust patina with some heavier rust on the buttplate from having been set there for many years. Stock is good, showing only light use, having some minor chipping to the ramrod channel and a small piece of wood missing from left of barrel tang. Sling swivels are stuck in place. This musket has an interesting history and needs only a lock and ramrod to be complete. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
