"S.SUTHERLAND", as marked on locks, secondary Confederate percussion shotgun. Inlaid in gold on barrel "S.SUTHERLAND.RICHMOND.VA". Bottom of barrels marked "H&S" for Hollis & Sheath manufacture, gauge marked 15 with British proofs, bores measure about 0.695". 32" barrels. This is a very high grade gun that would have been quite expensive in its day, and higher grade than the typical Southern gun observed. Metal parts are nicely engraved with untouched patina overall, has a little minimal pitting around the nipples. Hammers are mismatched and right one repaired, hammers match the condition of the gun well and were clearly used that way for a long time. Stock shows a good deal of honest wear and use, hand wear to the checkering, a couple old stress cracks in the left lock mortise. Ramrod is a replacement. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
