US contract M1817 "Common Rifle" by Henry Derringer. 36" barrel of .58 caliber smooth bore. First type marking with large "US" on lock over "DERINGER/PHILADA" and dated 1824. Has visible "LS" in oval script cartouche with "SNJ" marking and additional "X", with New Jersey markings also on barrel. Converted to percussion with a bolster breech section, likely for Civil War service. Metal parts have a brown rust patina overall with scattered areas of pitting, primarily on the barrel and bands. Stock was lightly cleaned and has areas of darker oil staining, shows some evidence of powder burn behind the hammer, small crack by front lock bolt, and a small diagonal crack in the left side of the forearm between the middle and upper bands, plus some expected minor chips in the ramrod channel. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
