Springfield M1863 Type I percussion musket, dated 1863 on lock. Nicely marked lock, barrel proofs are visible. Bored out to about 0.62" to remove rifling for smoothbore use. Metal parts have an untouched brown patina with scattered rust and minor pitting, mostly in the bolster area. Front sight blade was taken down during the period of use, leaving the flat bayonet stud functional. Stock is also untouched, possibly with some added oil finish, creating an attractive patina. Wood has scattered expected handling marks, has one spot to left of triggerguard bow that looks like a scratch, but may be part of an old crack, because the stock seems to have three handmade small-headed nails in it that are worn smooth like the rest of the stock. The front of the comb of the stock has three small, old "kill notches" carved. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
