rare early Springfield M1795 Type I percussion conversion musket. Dated 1801 on buttplate (earliest known date is 1799). Marked on lock "SPRINGFIELD" vertically behind hammer, eagle over US in front of hammer. Barrel is marked with V, P, and eaglehead; also US and 11, possibly a bench marking to keep the parts together when it was converted. 42-1/2" barrel. Metal parts have an untouched smooth chocolate patina with some scattered light pitting. Wood shows moderate wear and use overall with a sliver missing from forearm edge on left side between upper and middle bands, and a crack in the forearm edge on the opposite side. Has a couple minor hairline cracks at front and rear of lock. Interesting "DK" stamping rear of triggerguard. Mechanically good with unusually strong action, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
