M1808 original flintlock contract musket by R&C Leonard, Canton (Mass) 1811, as marked on lock. 44-1/4" barrel with proof on top of breech. Hammer welded at bottom jaw, screw is an old replacement square nut, and frizzen was refaced long ago. Missing middle band spring and sling swivels. Metal parts have a medium to dark brown patina overall with some slight granularness to the surfaces. Stock is good, showing average wear and use overall, has some slivering to the ramrod channel and forearm edges, a sliver missing from the lower lock mortise, a minor nail repair above the side plate, a small piece of wood replaced by the buttplate and comb of butt scooped out, as often observed on early guns, supposedly to facilitate shooting while wearing heavy coats in the winter. Has tiny nails in the wrist where an oval escutcheon once was. Overall a good looking early musket. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
