fine New England halfstock flintlock reconversion smooth rifle or fowler with silver mountings. 39" part round, part octagon barrel of about 0.51" bore. Triggerguard has the distinctive New England "teat" projection at front, stock may be of cherry, and wire inlay around barrel tang is in a New England style. Mountings are either silver finished or solid silver, if not solid silver, the finish is in very fine condition, with underlying brass surfaces only peeking through on the ramrod pipes and buttplate. Nice original loading rod with silver rifle-style tip. Barrel has a small open rear sight. Silver parts are a mix of tarnished and bright, iron parts have a mostly medium patina. Stock is very good, has a period owner name "I WELD" stamped in the belly of the butt, has a couple small cracks by the barrel pin escutcheons, behind the ramrod ferule, and above the lock. Overall, stock is sound and has a pleasing appearance. This gun was obviously made for a distinguished gentleman, or as a fine sample of the maker's work to show to potential clients. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
