C1840-60 plain percussion walnut fullstock rifle. 36" octagon barrel of 1-1/16" width and 0.49" bore. This stoutly built rifle is of moderate weight. Percussion trade lock marked "WILKES". The barrel has a nice rear sight with elevation adjustment and front sight. Simple rounded patch box with release on lid. Metal parts have a light to medium patina overall with brass parts probably having been cleaned at some point and some expected pitting in the barrel breech area. Walnut stock has nicely bordered checkering in the wrist and an interesting scooped out cheekrest. Wood shows moderate wear and use overall with some chipping around the lock screw and in the right forearm edge, left forearm edge is missing a long sliver associated with some diagonal cracks forward of the rear sight, and a sliver missing above the front of the lock. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
