British TOWER flintlock dragoon pistol. 9" round barrel with British proofs, about .69 caliber bore, about 15-1/2" overall. Oddly, this gun appears to be a partially done conversion to percussion, with the flintlock parts removed from the lock and flashpan rendered about flat with the lockplate, but the remnant of the flashpan shows a great deal of erosion matching pitting on the barrel, which is absolutely original flintlock. It really appears that a conversion was started, but then not completed, perhaps the gun was judged to not be in good enough condition, or other more pressing work had to be completed and this was just forgotten about. Either way, it makes quite a curiosity of the armorer's work, or an excellent candidate for reconversion to flintlock, as the flash hole is a very hard aspect to make appear correctly when performing this work. Brass parts have light to medium patina overall, iron parts have dark patina with light scattered rust and expected pitting in the flash hole area. Stock has an "R.T" marking opposite the lock, possibly a stock maker or storekeeper marking, shows average wear and use overall with minimal scattered marks from handling, has some missing wood around the lock mortise that is very well worn. Nice beaver tail carving around barrel tang. Lock is internally complete and clearly hadn't been out of the gun in a long time. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
