French M1766 Charleville percussion conversion musket. Faint "Charleville" marking on lock and "D" proof on left side of butt. Original length stock with barrel shortened to 43-3/4" during the period of use just in front of the bayonet stud, probably due to an eroded barrel muzzle. Metal parts have an untouched deep brown patina with some pitting in the barrel breech. Lower band and band spring are absent. Buttplate is somewhat worn through at the heel. Stock shows an attractive worn patina overall with initials "IC" engraved in right side of butt. Has a well-worn flake missing behind the sideplate, small crack in the forward part of the lock mortise, a couple chips on the forearm edges, and scattered expected handling marks. This is an attractive well used likely veteran of the Revolution and subsequent service. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
