Springfield M1873 .45-70 "trapdoor" cadet rifle. Serial number 40791. This is an early "pre-Custer" gun that was later upgraded for infantry service. The gun retains its early-numbered receiver, "high arch" breech block, and coarsely knurled hammer. Metal parts have a medium patina with good markings overall. Stock is good, showing moderate wear and use, with ramrod channel chipped, and showing numerous minor handling marks, but still sound and free of major cracks and chips. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
