Wonderful C1840 Perry County, PA swiveling breech double rifle by John Shuler, and so marked in block lettering on both barrels. There is a nice write-up in Kauffmann's "The Pennsylvania-Kentucky Rifle" that shows the original shop where the Shuler family worked still extant in Liverpool, PA, describes some of the non-gun interests of the Shulers, and notes that they were known in a wide radius of a prosperous area for the quality and accuracy of their product. 34" octagon barrels. Metal parts show average wear and use overall with some pitting in the barrel breech area. One front sight blade is absent. Simple brass ovoid patchbox. Curly maple stock has attractive patina and grain, showing smooth wear with a nicely shaped cheekrest. Mechanically good with set triggers, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
