C1840-60 percussion Pennsylvania fullstock rifle. 40" octagon barrel about 1-1/16" width, about 0.41" bore. Signed in script on top of barrel "S.Smith", maker and location could not be determined. Unmarked trade lock with engraving. Lock and barrel have an untouched patina aside from having cleaned the marking on the barrel to read it. Other metal furnishings have light patina overall with attractive border engravings. Nice silver heart inlays in sides of wrist, silver oval inlay in top of wrist, and ovoid silver inlay in wrist. Bottom of lock mortise suffered a stress crack from the mainspring, very typical, that was repaired and reinforced with a curved piece of brass in front of the lock and a football-shaped piece of brass below the lock. Stock has an attractive curly grain with an even smooth appearance with areas of nearly black patina and areas of hand wear showing the grain. Stock has an old added finish with a little powder burn around the bolster, tiny crack above lock screw, tiny chip by forearm cap, and a small triangular replaced piece of wood 1-1/2" x 1/2" below the rear sight, probably where the wood was chipped out removing a pin. This is a classic front-heavy rifle with a slim, graceful butt and wrist, and some lovely inlays. Mechanically good with set triggers, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
