C1850 percussion halfstock rifle signed "J.M.Burns" in script. John M. Burns is listed as having been born in 1832, appearing in the 1850 census in Columbiana County, Ohio. 39-1/2" 0.90" octagon barrel of about 0.32" bore. Nicely shaped 4-piece patchbox with additional small cap or implement box on opposite side in cheek rest. Barrel and lock have dark patina with a little pitting in the barrel breech area. Brass and German silver furnishings are cleaned. Nice original sights. Curly maple halfstock is good, having been cleaned and with a break in the lock area that shows some looseness, with some wood replaced opposite the lock, possibly to try and stabilize the break, and a small piece of wood behind the hammer replaced. Possibly original ramrod seems to have lost a little length. Mechanically good with set triggers, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
