Lee Firearms, Milwaukee, WI single shot breechloading rifle. 29-3/4" octagon barrel marked at breech "LEE'S FIRE ARMS CO. MILWAUKEE, WIS/PATD JULY 22D 1862." Serial number 1983. 38 caliber. An early effort of James P. Lee, whose Remington-Lee and Winchester-Lee staight pull rifles were more widely produced later in the 1800s. Unusual design where hammer tumbler engages a lug on the barrel to hold the barrel closed at rest and full cock, while lug is not engaged at half cock and barrel is free to open to the side. Manual extractor. Untouched "attic mint" condition with perfect rust patina throughout. Front sight blade absent. Stock is very good, has a minuscule crack by lower frame tang and buttplate, has some negligible nicking around the edges, but overall has an honest appearance from use. Hammer will cock if trigger is held forward, probably needs a sear spring. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
