Rare Smith & Wesson Model 3 American first variation 6" revolver. Serial number 178. Muzzle shows wear and coloration commensurate with the rest of the gun. We have obtained a S&W Historical Foundation letter which indicates the revolver was probably shipped 17 November 1870 to J.H.Buckland of Springfield, MA as a one-gun shipment at the wholesale price of $15.00. While no invoice with barrel length was found, Mr. Buckland is noted as having purchased a lot of special items from the S&W factory. Fine barrel marking. Metal parts with salt-and-pepper patina and scattered old light pitting. Walnut grips are cleaned smooth and slightly thin, showing minor handling marks. Mechanics are functional but worn, except the frame latch the lacks spring tension and is sticky. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
