Gibbs Tiffany & Co underhammer percussion pistol. Flayderman 7E-015. 3-3/4" part octagon, part round barrel. Marked on top flat of barrel breech "GIBBS TIFFANY & CO./STURBRIDGE MASS" with agent marking "E.HUTCHINGS & CO/AGENTS-BALTO" and additional "CAST.STEEL" marking on side barrel flat. Portions of the marking are weak, but the distinctive eagle marking is strong. Iron parts have a brown patina, brass parts were polished bright. Wood grip shows numerous minor handling marks and an honestly used appearance overall with a couple minor corner chips. This is a distinctive style of pistol and no gun collection is complete without an example of the elegant, slender New England underhammer pistol. They were a graceful piece of early industrial work that only existed for a short time. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
