M1842 USN "box lock" percussion pistol by Ames. This model holds the distinction of being the first percussion arm adopted by the US military, and the only firearm produced for the government by the Ames firm, who are much more famous for their generations of swordmakers. Dated 1844 on lock and barrel. Metal parts have a mostly light patina with brass parts having been cleaned at some point. Barrel and lock have good markings and some scattered pitting. Stock is lightly refinished with faint cartouches opposite lock, with worn chips in the butt and a sliver missing from lower lock mortise. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
