Large frame Merwin, Hulburt & Co. "Army" revolver. Early production gun with square butt. .44-40 caliber indicated by marking on frame "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1873". Barrel shortened to "belly gun" length of 3-3/4" during the period, as indicated by wear and coloration that matches the rest of the gun. Desirable mottled red-and-black composition grips show average wear and use, free of cracks and chips aside from one spot on the lower edge of the left grip that could be a worn spot or a worn small chip. Metal parts are a cleaned light gray overall with scattered light pitting. Mechanically good except cylinder a little wobbly when cocked. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
