rare early Springfield M1795 Type I flintlock musket. Dated 1800 on buttplate (earliest known date is 1799). Marked on lock "SPRINGFIELD" vertically behind hammer, eagle over US in front of hammer. Barrel is marked with V, P, and eaglehead; also US and SNY, indicating later ownership by New York State under the Militia Act of 1808. 44-1/2" round barrel with some old vise marks near breech. Sling swivels are absent. Gun has a pleasing medium patina overall with slightly granular surfaces. Stock is very interesting, showing two large knots in the grain of the butt that likely would not have been allowed to happen as production improved to a higher standard. Wood shows moderate wear and use overall with some old slivering to the forearm edge on left side where it thinned from use, numerous minor marks, age checks in the aforementioned knots, a worn spot in the lower lock mortise, old small piece missing left of barrel tang, and small crack by side plate. Old initials "MM" lightly carved opposite lock. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
