Assembled M1861 Springfield musket. 1864 dated lock, barrel proofs visible, inspector cartouches faintly visible opposite lock. Original 40" barrel bores smooth to about .61 caliber. Original rear sight is an open v-notch replacement, and the ramrod is a period handmade rod with a crude lead head. Otherwise, gun is complete and composed of original parts. Metal parts have a mostly dark patina with light pitting overall. Stock is worn and shows numerous marks from use, including worn chipping to the ramrod channel, a worn piece missing from below the front of the lock, some cap burnout behind the hammer, and a large, worn spot behind the triggerguard that appears to have been struck with something sharp. It is not too fanciful to think the damage could have come from hand-to-hand combat. This is a fair condition musket that very well may have "seen the elephant" during the civil war and then been used purposefully long after. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
