US M1812 Whitney "N.HAVEN" federal contract musket. Appears to be Style II, as described as in Flayderman 5J-018. Has "JN" script cartouche opposite lock of federal inspector J. Newbury. 42" round barrel. This gun is in an untouched "attic mint" state with rust on most of the metal parts, with the casehardened lock being better protected from rust over the years. The rust looks like it could be cleaned if desired, with surfaces underlying looking to be smooth. There is even a set of inspector initials by the nipple that would have been quickly obliterated under minimal use. Opposite the lock is a "IIII" marking, reminiscent of a Roman numeral, we have observed similar numerals on other Whitney muskets, and is probably a mating mark for the workers doing the conversion to reassemble the gun with its original parts. Stock has an equally untouched appearance with various minor handling marks from storage over the years, and a small crack in the ramrod channel under the lower band spring. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
