Double-US Surcharged French M1763 Charleville percussion conversion musket. 45" barrel. Boldly "US" surcharged on barrel breech and lock tail. Faint "Charleville" script signature on lockplate. Rarely observed barrel markings include trace of the "M1763" marking on the barrel tang and dated of "65" (1765) on side of barrel with French proof, making this one of the earliest of M1763 muskets. Metal parts show expected wear and use with an attractive medium gray patina overall with some scattered pitting, particularly in the breech area. Sling swivels are present and the ramrod is a period blacksmith-made replacement. Stock shows wear from use with an attractive patina overall, shows chipping to the ramrod channel, crack in front of the triggerguard, a crack above and in front of the side plate, and a crack in the lower lock mortise. These cracks have had some wood filler added and colored some time ago. Nipple is broken off. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
