rare Winchester-Hotchkiss first model US Army saddle ring carbine. Serial number 2955. Well-marked receiver and barrel proofs. Partial cartouche in stock behind saddle ring. Only 501 produced. Presents as a good carbine, aside from missing rear sight, but our mechanic advises us that the magazine assembly is missing, as is the trigger spring. Due to the trigger spring, the bolt should not be drawn back fully or parts will come out of alignment and it will not close. Bolt has good spring tension. Metal parts have a plumb patina with some pitting on the buttplate. Stock is good, having been skived down in the comb long ago. Wood shows expected handling marks with a small lateral crack in the usual place this model cracked, by the selector on the right and the ring mount on the left. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
