Springfield M1884 .45-70 assembled carbine. Serial number 540564. Modified skillfully from a rifle using a correct buttplate with trap, "C" marked Buffington rear sight, carbine barrel band, and ring bar/ring. Triggerguard bow is altered to carbine configuration from rifle. 23-1/4" barrel is a little long but presents the opportunity to slightly shorten, crown the muzzle, and apply a correct rear sight blade/base. Metal parts are mostly a plumb blue finish mixing with patina, and some pitting on the gray buttplate. Rifle stock with 1892 inspector cartouche altered to carbine configuration, wood has several added stamped letters, lightly cleaned and refinished, showing scattered minor marks, free of cracks. Has original armory marks, possibly New York, with "9 K 87" on heel of buttstock and "9" in right side of buttstock. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
