Hall M1843 breechloading carbine. One of the rifled guns subject to the "Hall Carbine Affair", in which 5,000 carbines were purchased from the government as surplus, then immediately sold at substantial profit before being rifled and shipped. Contributed to the relief of command of John C. Fremont. Read more in Flayderman 9A-278. The 2nd and 9th IL Cavalry were known to have been armed with rifled Halls. Dated 1851. Browned barrel, bands, and frame, casehardened breech block, triggerguard and buttplate lightly cleaned. Stock has visible cartouches on both sides of the breech, showing light wear and use with scattered minor dings and a couple scratches. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
