scarce Springfield M1881 "Forager" 20 gauge shotgun. Serial number 732. Only 1376 produced. Correct configuration of 1873 dated lock with coarse knurled hammer, 1881 dated breechblock produced just for this model, carbine trigger guard, and stock made by Springfield from a surplus Civil War musket stock. 26" barrel with brass bead front sight. Metal parts are well marked with a mix of original blue finish and medium patina with some scattered pitting, mostly on the underside of the barrel, but a little on the receiver, lock and buttplate. Stock is fair to good condition with excellent 1885 cartouche and "P" firing proof. As is typically the case, the wood shows signs of being subjected to hard use, with a light added finish and numerous light to moderate handling marks. One crack is present in front of the lock, which was secured with 3 small nails long ago. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
