scarce Whitney-Howard "Thunderbolt" single barrel lever action shotgun - $850.00

Please click the image for a larger version
scarce Whitney-Howard "Thunderbolt" single barrel lever action shotgun. Unusual action that slides a bolt back on the bottom of the frame for loading a single shotshell. Working the lever also cocks the action, and closing it readies for fire. Ultimately, the action proved not to be strong enough, and production ceased with only about 200 shotguns being produced. Marked on right side of barrel "WHITNEY ARMS CO WHITNEYVILLE CONN" and on left side of barrel "CHARLES HOWARD'S PATENTS OF SEPT 26 AND OCT 10 1865 AND MAY 15 1866". 36" barrel, 20 gauge. Metal parts have a medium patina overall with the markings being somewhat worn. Oft-criticized Whitney quality of manufacture is evident with castings flaws in both sides of the lever and a small crack by the lever screw on the left side. Stock exhibits expected wear and use with numerous minor marks to the original finish and a little minor chipping near the buttplate. Action appears to be functional. Firing this arm would be ill-advised as the action proved to not be robust. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
