M1884 US Springfield .45-70 "trapdoor" rifle. Serial number 237358. Stock nicely cartouched 1890, barrel shortened to about 16", stock shortened in front of lower band spring. M1879 "R" sight with slotless screws, sling swivel ground off. Has a collar added to the barrel muzzle to make it about 18" long. Metal surfaces have some original blue mixing with light surface rust and some pitting near the barrel muzzle. It is marked NGP in the wood several places and also on the buttplate. We have never seen this marking on a gun but can only assume that is for National Guard of Pennsylvania, since that's what the cartridge boxes were from. Cleaning rod is absent. Stock is very good with minimal handling marks and appears free of cracks. The unusual markings make this a gun well deserving of restoration. Mechanically good except breech block is a little sticky to open. Sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
