early Springfield M1868 .50-70 "trapdoor" rifle. Serial number 5916. Breech block dated 1869. Metal parts have a pleasing light to medium gray patina overall with good markings. Four visible cartouches opposite lock. Stock shows moderate wear and use overall with slivering to the cleaning rod channel and numerous minor marks from handling, while retaining good original lines to the lock mortise and area opposite. Has a small filled chip by the rear lock bolt and the forearm shows three worn dings from where the rifle was no doubt rested while being fired. Overall, this is a nice, honest Indian Wars veteran. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
