Rare M1865 "First Allin" cadet rifle. This twice-arsenal converted rifle started out life as a M1863 Springfield musket, was converted to the Allin "trapdoor" system as a 3-band rifle, then later shortened at the arsenal to a 2-band cadet configuration. Has the original Allin ESA cartouche and later SWP cartouche from time of conversion. Has additional correct and distinctive features of the original middle band removed, the spring removed, its channel filled in, and the stock bump-out for the band made smooth. The sling mount was removed from the original middle band and brazed on to the upper band, creating a distinctive upper band that is constructed differently from later trapdoor bands. All of these distinctive features are described in Flaydermans, making this one of a limited number converted at the armory and not an aftermarket cut-down. 1865-dated Springfield lock. Metal parts have an attractive medium patina overall with some pitting on the hammer and buttplate. Stock is very good with strong cartouches and uncleaned appearance, showing some minor nicks to the cleaning rod channel and forearm edges, and scattered handling marks, a few of which are moderate in nature. Mechanically good, including easily damaged ratchet extractor mechanism, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
