Massive double barrel "cape gun" side-by-side rifle-shotgun combination by Spang & Wallace, Philadelphia, as marked on locks. There are no markings or proofs on the barrels, suggesting American manufacture and not imported barrels, which were more often used. Spang & Wallace is listed as having produced flintlock and percussion guns in Philadelphia, PA from 1830-1856. Right bore is rifle of about 0.55", left bore is shotgun of about 0.68-0.69", or 14 gauge. 37" barrels. Weight 13 pounds, 6 ounces. Original fixed sights. Plain wooden ramrod. Metal parts are nicely engraved on the locks and other furniture. Metal parts have rich untouched patina overall with minor scattered pitting on the barrels. Stock has attractive fan-pattern grain in the butt, double-keyed forestock to support the heavy barrels, nicely checkered in the wrist. Butt made with cheekrest on left side, stamped with old number 1270 on right side of butt, possibly from an old collection. Wood is sound and free of cracks, uncleaned with nice finish and patina overall, showing expected handling marks and scattered minor "flea bite" chips to edges and toe of butt. Left nipple is chipped. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
