C1840-60 New York state half stock percussion rifle marked "N.LEWIS MAKER TROY N.Y" on top of barrel near breech. Nelson Lewis was a noted eastern NY maker from 1843-1888 ]who produced fine percussion rifles, including sniper-style rifles in the civil war period. 31-1/4" long 1" octagon barrel of about .43 caliber. Iron parts have a medium patina and lightly granular appearance overall. Furnishings are plain German silver, including an ovoid patchbox. Stock is nicely made, showing minor handling scratches overall, a few scattered moderate handling marks, a small crack behind the lock, and a narrow strip of wood replaced along the right forearm edge long ago. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
