C1790 New England flintlock rifle by Silas Allen, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Signed in script on barrel "S Allen Shrewsbury" with masonic square and compass. Silas Allen is listed from 1750-1834 with a son of the same name 1785-1868. Gun is a well-aged reconversion to flintlock. 42-1/2" octagon barrel of about .53 caliber bore. Metal parts are mostly a very dark patina with a nicely engraved patchbox. Wrist was broken and repaired with a brass plate and screws during the period; to which the beautiful engraved silver wrist escutcheon was affixed. Stock is made with a thick butt that is typical of early rifles, it has an attractive light curly grain overall. There is a small well worn piece of wood missing on either side of the triggerguard below the lock, and the forestock has some added finish. Mechanically good except releases from half cock, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
