Early M1842 Springfield musket dated 1845. Well marked lock, visible barrel proofs, tang date mostly obscured, no stock cartouches visible. Metal parts are mostly a dark patina with some expected light pitting in the barrel breech area. Buttplate has been cleaned of what must have been more moderate rust, and shows some moderate pitting from storage. Stock has remains of some old added finish, shows typical light handling marks, some minor chipping in the ramrod channel, a couple small age checks in the lock mortise, and some minor edge chipping around the buttplate. Overall better than average condition for an early gun that could have seen action in the Mexican and Civil Wars. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
