M1816 Springfield Type III flintlock musket. Dated 1833 on lock and barrel. A group of 150 flintlock Sprinfields dated 1833 were sent for service in the Mexican War in 1848, see "U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets", second volume, page 243. Rack numbered "13" behind proofs on barrel; several other muskets are known with similarly marked numbers, possibly suggesting an association with these Mexican service guns. Metal parts are partly cleaned with a mottled patina and some scattered light pitting. Stock shows average wear and use overall with a light added finish. Cartouches are visible opposite the lock, there is a small chip at rear of lock, and small crack by the lock screw and a couple small slivers missing by upper barrel band in ramrod channel. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
