Springfield M1816 Type III percussion conversion musket. Matching dates of 1835 on lock and barrel tang. Good barrel proofs, and cartouche present opposite lock. Metal parts have an uncleaned patina with medium to dark surfaces and scattered rust with scattered pitting. More pitting is present on the buttplate. Stock shows average wear and use overall with good edges, showing numerous expected handling marks, some small nicks in the ramrod channel, three age checks in the lock mortise, a small crack by the rear lock bolt, and some small age checks by the buttplate. There is a little dry wood chipping by the heel of the buttplate, probably from where it sat untouched for many years. Interestingly, there is a stamped "44" in front of the buttplate tang in an area where an older number or marking was carved out. This is an interesting musket that could have seen a good deal of service in the Mexican War and Civil War. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
