M1808 US contract musket marked on lock "D.HENKLES/PHILA" and dated 1814 at tail of lock. Also marked "W/P/US" at left of barrel breech. 42-1/2" round barrel. Stock proofed "V" of "MTW", possibly federal inspector Marine T. Wickham, who is listed from 1811-1815 inspecting Evans muskets, North pistols, and Harpers Ferry. Listed in Flayderman's entry 9A-162 as an independent or otherwise unidentified contract, but this shows good signs of having been a federal contract or a sample of the maker's work in search of a contract. This is the only one we ever recall seeing, making it a very rare musket. Metal parts have a dark patina overall with scattered old rust, and some scattered pitting, primarily in the barrel breech and the buttplate. Sling swivels are absent. Stock is worn smooth from use with an attractive patina, has proofs visible opposite lock, crack present opposite lock, some minor age checking in the butt, a small piece of wood neatly replaced left of barrel tang and a small piece of wood neatly replaced in front of the rear lock screw. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
