French M1763/66 "Charleville" flintlock musket. Wonderful proof mark and script arsenal marking on lock plate. Well-used original flintlock musket with period refaced frizzen. 44-3/8" round barrel. Metal parts have light uncleaned surface rust and a dark patina overall with scattered pitting primarily in the barrel breech area and buttplate. Stock shows moderate wear and use overall, having had finish added long ago, has a hairline crack through the lock and sideplate area with a little glue present at the tail of the lock, shows a small chip by the rear lock screw and a chip from the left side of the forearm edge. There is an old collection number attached to the left side of the butt, which may represent the last time it was cleaned, likely 40 or 50 years ago. The comb of the stock was shaved down during the period of use. We have never seen this on a gun known only to have served in Europe, and have seen it many times on early American muskets. Several theories have been advanced as to why this was done; to accommodate men's large beards, to accommodate their greatcoats worn in cold climates, or possibly for cross eye dominant shooters. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
