Confederate blockade-run P1853 British Enfield musket. Bears the ANCHOR-S acceptance stamp used by CS inspector John Southgate, better known for the "JS Anchor" mark. The ANCHOR-S was used from mid-1863 through the end of the war. Lock is marked TOWER 1863 with crown, butt has the circular BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS TRADE. There is an illegible stock marking opposite the lock at rear of flat, and along the bottom of the butt. Original 39" barrel, bore measures about 0.595" and is dirty without rifling apparent. Stock was cut under the lower band and an old restoration of the forearm is present, which itself is marked from handling and cracked with two old screws present. Original stock portion was lightly cleaned and shows some light grain cracks. Metal parts were cleaned some time ago, having acquired a light to medium patina, showing some pitting in the barrel breech area and a crack in the barrel tang. Rear sight ladder is absent, one the sight "ears" are absent, as are the ramrod and sling swivels. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
