William Palmer patent cartridge carbine. Made by E.G.Lamson & Co, Windsor Vermont, and so marked on the lock. Delivered at the end of the Civil War in 1865. Only 1000 were produced. This is the first true bolt action arm adopted by the United States military. The turn-bolt design is similar to that which is still in use today, and the hammer directly strikes the rim of a Spencer cartridge that is loaded one at a time. Well marked metal parts, inspector cartouche visible in stock opposite lock. Metal parts were lightly cleaned to a light gray. Stock may have been lightly cleaned, but has a very attractive smooth appearance overall with just a few minor marks, free of cracks and chips. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
