Scarce Jenks-Maynard USN carbine with Maynard tape primer. Only 1000 produced by Remington in 1847 and 1848. Along with its sister carbine and rifle by Ames, these are the only "mule-ear" percussion arms adopted into US service. Marked on lock "REMINGTON'S/HERKIMER/N.Y." Marked on top of barrel breech "W.JENKS/U.S.N/RP/P/1847/CAST STEEL". Stock with clear "RP" script inspector cartouche. Metal parts have attractive medium to dark uncleaned patina overall with minimal granular pitting and readily visible markings. Stock is good with an attractive patina and light wear overall, with a light crack on the left that more or less mirrors the length of the loading lever, some minor chips at rear of lock, and a negligible diagonal crack below the lock. Mechanically good, sold as a collector item only, not warranted safe to shoot.
